What We Treat
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Spectrum Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides care for high risk pregnant women and women with chronic illnesses considering pregnancy. Comprehensive diagnosis and management can include preconception counseling, genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, basic and targeted ultrasound, fetal therapy, and antenatal testing. Maternal-fetal medicine services at Spectrum Health are available on inpatient, outpatient and consultative basis.
Why You May Need to Be Referred to Our Practice
Most women are referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist because they are "at risk" and considering becoming pregnant, are pregnant and "high risk," have a complicated condition, or are otherwise concerned about their pregnancy.
A maternal-fetal medicine specialist is a physician who has completed two to three years of a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship after completing four years of an obstetrics and gynecology residency upon graduation from medical school.
Through fellowship training, maternal-fetal medicine specialists gain special competence in various obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists provide care or consultation for both the mother and fetus (unborn baby) in a complicated pregnancy.

Working with Your Doctor
Many obstetrician-gynecologists are qualified by training and experience to manage complicated pregnancies. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists supplement the skills of these physicians by providing consultations, co-management or direct care for patients in complicated pregnancies. It is the policy of our office to work with your referring physician. Whenever possible, you will be returned to his or her care.
Working with Other Specialists
It may sometimes be necessary for our staff to work with other medical specialists, including neonatologists and pediatric subspecialists. These doctors have proven to be invaluable to patients and their families, helping to coordinate the care of the mother and fetus during pregnancy and birth, and throughout the neonatal period.
Ultrasound Studies
It may be necessary to perform an ultrasound of you and your fetus to evaluate or improve the management of your pregnancy. Please bring reports of any previous ultrasounds when you visit.
Our Office
We are unable to provide child care for your young children during your appointment. If you have to bring your small children, please make certain that a responsible adult is present to supervise them. Because of the specialized nature of our practice, students from many medical fields come to observe. You may meet one or two during your visit.
